Lake Kournas

The Lake Kournas is the only one freshwater lake in Crete – was known in ancient times: Lake Koressia.

The streams from nearby mountains provide water. Much of the water enters the lake in the spring: because the climate of Western Crete is very dry in the summer months – most streams dry up during this period. [/swpm_protected]

The lake is close to the village of Kournas – which was built on a hill: from there have a wonderful view of the fabulous lake.

Kournas village 5 km, Chania 45 km, Rethymno 25 km, Kissamos 76 km.

On the road from Georgioupoli to the lake Kournas, beautiful views of the White Mountains.

There are wonderful olive groves along the way. It is characteristic of Crete, that there are many lovely chapels along the way. [/swpm_protected]

Lake Kournas and its surroundings are part of the Natura 2000 program.

Lives in this place:

– wild ducks

– herons

– cormorants

– eels, because the water is very clear

Between the mountains, in the valley – we can see the crystal-clear water of lake.

Lake Kournas is an ideal place for a day trip. A nice walk around the beautiful lake is about 1 – 1.5 hours. The road is 3.5 km.

There are several taverns and cafes on Lake Kournas serving traditional Cretan cuisine. You might want to try “apaki” (smoked pork). The view: from the restaurants is unique.

There is a small beach on the shore of the lake. We can swim in this part, or can be rented: boats and pedal boats.

[swpm_protected format_protected_msg=”1″] Due to the melting snow in the mountains in spring, and because of more rainfall: the water level of the lake rises. During this period: the beach disappears. The weather is wetter in winter and spring. The lake is different in all seasons. [/swpm_protected]

The lake is worth a visit all year round. Most of the taverns are also open in winter. Some tavernas are only open on weekends: between December and January.

As part of the excursion, you must visit the village of Kournas. In the village, is located after the Church of St. Irene, the best restaurant: Taverna KALI KARDIA. It has to be tasted: the delicious Cretan salad, and very tasty grilled meats.
