AVLAKI GORGE

 

Avlaki Gorge is located in the Arkoudovounia area, on Cape Melecha, 20 km from Chania. The gorge is very interesting sights in Western Crete. Many monks and hermits found refuge in the caves of the gorge. Due to the monasteries, its religious value is outstanding.
Next to the Gouverneto Monastery begins, the stony road, to the gorge. The first section of the road leads to the ruins of the ancient church of Artemis. Next to the ruins is the Αrkoudospilios “Bear Cave”
The first stage of the visit, the first part of the way is 15-20 minutes.

The ruins of the ancient church of Artemis

The Katholiko Monastery was built inside the gorge.
In this part is the Cave of St. John the Hermit. The second section of the road leads to this part.
If we continue walk from the cave, we will arrive after a 30–40-minute walk.
