Bear Cave

Αrkoudospilios “Bear Cave”

A stony footpath leads from the Gouverneto Monastery via the Strait of Avlaki, to the Katholiko Monastery.
Going down the hill, after about a 20-minute walk, we can visit the famous Αrkoudospilios (“Bear Cave”).
The cave got its name from a stalactite shape, which looks like a bear.

This cave has been used since ancient times: to the worship. There is evidence of the cult of Artemis and Apollo.

In the Christian era, it was dedicated to Arkoudiotissa Panaghia (Our Lady).

The Katholiko Monastery was built inside the gorge.

Attention:

[swpm_protected format_protected_msg=”1″] There is only natural light in the cave. There is no artificial lighting.

An illuminated device is needed for an adventurous view of the stalactite formations. Either a light on your mobile phone, or a flashlight.

The sensitivity of today’s cameras is many times more sensitive, like the human eye. The pictures show the cave very spectacularly.

Only possible with lighting device, to see the same experience in live. [/swpm_protected]
