Αrkoudospilios “Bear Cave”
A stony footpath leads from the Gouverneto Monastery via the Strait of Avlaki, to the Katholiko Monastery.
Going down the hill, after about a 20-minute walk, we can visit the famous Αrkoudospilios (“Bear Cave”).
The cave got its name from a stalactite shape, which looks like a bear.
This cave has been used since ancient times: to the worship. There is evidence of the cult of Artemis and Apollo.
In the Christian era, it was dedicated to Arkoudiotissa Panaghia (Our Lady).
In this area, ascetics lived in caves.
The Katholiko Monastery was built inside the gorge.
In this part is the Cave of St. John the Hermit. The second section of the road leads to this part.
If we continue walk from the cave, we will arrive after a 30–40-minute walk.

An illuminated device is needed for an adventurous view of the stalactite formations. Either a light on your mobile phone, or a flashlight.
