BALOS BEACH – BALOS LAGOON

The pearl of Western Crete is the Balos Lagoon, with the picturesque turquoise waters – part of the coast is covered with pale pink sand.

It is the 35th most beautiful beach in the world.

It is God`s wonderful gift for the people. Blessed be the Lord for this fabulous gift!

The unique Balos Lagoon is located from Chania 56 km and from Kissamos (Kastelli) 17 km.

The Balos Lagoon can be approached in three different ways.
The first option is:  from Kissamos new port by boat.

[swpm_protected format_protected_msg=”1″] For the first time: we approached the Balos Lagoon by ship.
The ship despite the big waves glided easily on the water. We sailed next to Platiskina Mountain, because the lagoon is between Cape Gramvousa and Cape Tigani.

The Kissamos Bay is one of the largest spawning grounds for dolphins in Europe. We can see during the cruise, as dolphins happily jumping.[/swpm_protected]

The second option is: from the Balo’s Beach Ticket Station is an 8 kilometer long road to the mountain top. The road is a stony, rocky road. There are no railing along the way. The level difference is 143 meters.

Recommended for very good drivers only. The way, on the stony road, with car is approx. 1 hour long.

[swpm_protected format_protected_msg=”1″] As the water of the lagoon is shallow along the shore, the ship anchors at the entrance to the lagoon.

We can get from the ship, to the beach – by speedboat. We need to transfer from the ship to the speedboat, so this trip is only available for adults and children 12 years of age or older.

Due to the transfer, the clear time, which we can spend at Balos Beach is approx. 2.5 hours. [/swpm_protected]

Strata Tours minibuses leave for A Balos Beach several times a day. If You book in time: You can head to Balos in the morning and spend up to 5-7 hours in fabulous surroundings. [/swpm_protected]

The way, with the STRATA TOURS air-conditioned Mercedes minibus is, approx. 20 minutes long. Because the minibuses are taller and have stronger tire.

Pink sand can be observed in some places. Over the centuries, millions of crushed shells provide the beautiful pink sand.
The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal for young children

The lagoon is a protected area! The Eleonora hawks, and cormorants are nesting in the caves belonging to the lagoon.
The park, protected by the Natura 2000 program, is home to the monk seal and the sea turtle: Caretta caretta.

[swpm_protected format_protected_msg=”1″] During the summer, Balos is visited by thousands of people everyday. If you do not like crowds, you’d better avoid to visit the beach in July and August.
The water of the Balosi Lagoon changes according to the time of day, this is influenced by the sun. The color of the sea is bright blue in places, but the turquoise water is dominant.
The combination of the sun, the turquoise water, the white sand gives a very pleasant cavalcade of colors. [/swpm_protected]
