WATER MILL

The water management is very important, in West Crete.
People try to use every drop of water usefully. There is little rainfall, especially in the summer it is very dry period.
That’s reason: why they built this unusual water mill.

The watermill is usually built along a stream or river. In Western Crete, however, during the summer: the streams dry up. Therefore, this solution was not applicable.
But with this unique solution, what we can see here: they were able to create a water mill, which could be used for most of the year.

The first step:

It is very important to collect rainwater, rainfall: this was collected in a huge well. The water mill was powered – by water collected in the well.

Step Two:

When the miller wanted to grind the grain: he let so much water from the well into the water disk, the water turbine: as needed to rotate the mill wheel – as needed for grinding.

Step Three:

It is very important to reuse water! After the water drove the wheel of the mill: after then the water was used for irrigation.
