KOMOLITHI
POTAMIDA
At the village of Potamida, unique, small hills of clay can be seen: Komolithi. Due to the erosion of time, the clay hills have become interesting and uniquely shaped, cone shaped. The slopes of the hills are mostly barren, with vegetation only at the top. They are made almost entirely of clay.
The Komolithi and villages of Potamida belong to the province of Kissamos. This place is located in the fertile valley of the river Tyflos. Chania is 38 km away, and Kissamos is 6.5 km away.

In the 1970s, Dutch researchers studied the formations.
According to the researchers, the origin of the geological phenomenon [swpm_protected format_protected_msg=”1″] can be dated to 10 million years ago.
In the Miocene (the oldest period of the Neogene), when the Mediterranean was formed.
At that time: the eastern part of Crete rose above the water, while the western part, in which Komolithi is located, was under water. This explains the presence of marine fossils and the type of geological material from which the mountains originated.
The first study of the Komolithi material showed that these were sedimentary rocks that had accumulated more than 7 million years ago at the turn of the Torton and Messyn eras. [/swpm_protected]
